Why is my hearing aid making a whistling or feedback sound?

Last updated on Nov 06, 2025

Whistling or feedback occurs when amplified sound leaks out of your ear and gets picked up again by the hearing aid's microphone, creating a loop. Common causes include: improper fit (the hearing aid may be loose), excessive earwax blocking your ear canal, a cracked ear mold or tubing, or volume settings that are too high. Try reinserting your hearing aid properly, cleaning any visible wax, and lowering the volume. If feedback persists, contact your hearing care provider as you may need a refit or professional cleaning.
